After losing everything and barely escaping the menacing pirates of the Black Fleet, Calitha Araxie and her friends sail for the icy continent of Jarnfold in the hopes of finding refuge. But landing there doesn’t mean they’ve found freedom.

Fearful of her unbridled powers and her growing feelings for Dagwood, who is still grieving deeply, Cali cuts a deal with a God that might just save them all. But as they prepare to journey to the walled city of Orlême, an unexpected attack forces Cali to unleash her powers until they reach an uncontrollable level…with devastating consequences.

Stranded in a frozen wilderness without Dagwood, Cali must strike out on her own and guide her wounded friends on their gruelling journey to have any chance of reaching civilisation and surviving. Meanwhile, Dagwood must use every trick in his repertoire to pass from town to city and make it to Orlême, evading the Black Fleet at all costs.
